Illustrator- Pictures of Hollis Woods

My job was to illustrate a scene of my choice from the chapters we read. This drawing depicts Hollis, holding her baby sister Christina, after deciding to live with the Regans again. I chose this scene because it was a very happy scene, as she is reunited with the loving Regans, who have taken care of her and missed her after she had run away.

Picture of Hollis Woods- Connector

My group was really talking about the miss understanding we had but It all turned out well as you see we discussed how the book had connected something with our lives and what we have learned from It. As my job I am a connector and I am going to tell you how this chapter connects to my life.

In this chapter It all starts when In chapter seventeen, Steven talks the entire time that Hollis phones Beatrice. Beatrice answers the phone with worry because she has been worried about Josie since she could not reach them for days. Hollis assures Beatrice that Josie is safely with her as Steven's voice in her head tells her she may have never come home if she had not made this mess. Hollis tells Beatrice that Josie wants to come home, but the agency will not let her live alone and they want to send Hollis somewhere else. Beatrice says she will come home and move in with Josie right away, and Hollis assures her that Josie will be glad to see her. Steven tells Hollis that they started working on her bedroom, and he wanted to paint it green for holy.

This a little bit connects to my life because I usually talk a lot like Steven and my brother usually Is Beatrice because he fears when someone talks on the phone he doesn't know whats going on. And when I make a mess It reminds me that I cant come home or I will be In trouble. This reminds me of how my family cares for me because they don't let me just go somewhere alone because they are afraid that someone may come to me or do something bad like the agents did to Josie they protected her so that's how this story reminds me of the things you want to do cant always be what you want and If you were to think about It then I think the adults are usually right.
Summary of Hollis Woods

This is the last post that I will post about this book (Pictures of Hollis Woods). Since I have read the whole book. This is a summary about chapter 15-17.

Hollis has escaped from many homes before and this time she is planning to take Josie with her. Remembering her past family, the Regans, though her pictures, Hollis plans to take Josie and live in their summer house in Branches. Hollis doesn't know if it is okay for her to stay. Remembering the Regans, and how she was so close with them, remembering the Old Man, Izzy, and Steven. Remembering how they said the house in Branches was now hers, but is it still that way now that she has run away? It is a long trip, but Hollis and Josie finally arrive at the house in branches. After a while Josie gets homesick and misses her cousin Beatrice. Hollis feels that she must take Josie home. On her way to the payphone she sees a man in the distance. The man comes closer, and it turns out to be Steven Regan. Hollis is surprised and filled with joy. Steven has come to ask Hollis to come home. Hollis is happy to go back with the Regans, and calls Beatrice to come and pick up Josie. Saying goodbye was hard for Hollis, but she knew she would see Josie again. Hollis comes back home to the Regan family with a surprise of the new baby Christina. And she knows that now she has a real family that will accept her for whom she is.

Picture of Hollis Woods - Summarizer.

During Literacy Circles we were discussing why was that happening In the book since I am a Summarizer and what we though what will happen next In the book. Now I am going to tell you more about the book and our discussions might answer the question why did that happen In the book.

This will just be a plot summary of what happened In the chapters. It all started when Hollis went fishing, hiding when she saw a stranger walking by. During that time Hollis was wondering what will regans say about her staying In there house. Suddenly as a Christmas gift  Hollis draws a picture of Josie and Beatrice but she forgot that Josie was sad and Homesick. Next Hollis was planning to go climbing on the mountain and she shouts out that she has a family. But she suddenly hearts her ankle when climbing up the mountain. Luckily Steven drives the truck to rescue her but the truck overturns and Steven gets hospitalized.

Illustrator
This time whilst I was reading Pictures of Hollis Woods I decided to be Illustrator. We read from chapter 10 to 15.

I drew a picture of Hollis when she was fishing from a river. She was hiding when she notices a suspicious man across the lake. She  I chose this part because it was interesting since she was trying to fish while hiding from any person who walks by. And I just wanted to keep reading to see if the man would find her but he didn't. Anyway, I enjoyed reading this part because it kept me on the edge wanting to read more and more.

Picture of Hollis Woods Illustrator.

This  picture shows how Steven teaches Hollis to drive. I chose this part of the book because the chapter was really making the reader want to know what happens in the next.  And It was  also Interesting because It showed that Hollis had no fear driving for the first time on the slippery mountain. She did the right thing by doing what she wanted and not listening to her friend by going and watching a movie.

Discussion Director- Pictures of Hollis Woods

My job was to write a list of questions that my group would discuss , and share our opinions on that part of the book.

My questions include:

What do you think Hollis and Josie's lives would be like if they were seperated?

If Hollis and Josie were seperated, Josie would most likely have a hard time living alone as she is getting older, and her memory is getting worse, and she is often forgetting things. On the other hand, Hollis would live a life of regret and guilt, as she would not have fulfilled her promise to stay and take care of the old lady. She would always have a burden, as she left the Regans, and she cannot afford to make the same mistake again. The rest of my group had the same response.

In your opinion, why do you think Hollis is having trouble with her behavior and marks at school?

I think she is struggling at school because of her unstable life outside of school. Not getting the right support from her caretakers could be a factor of her behavior, and she feels like she is missing a piece of her life, a proper family. In Rhianna's opinion, Hollis is getting bad marks because she is unstable, and is focused on finding a proper family.

Why do you think social services are moving Hollis to a new family?

They are moving Hollis to a new family because her caretaker, Josie, is no longer considered capable and fit to take care of and hold responsibility of Hollis, as Josie is slowly losing her memory. According to Rhianna, another factor of their decision to move Hollis was because Josie was not sending Hollis to school on a daily basis.

Would you have run away with Josie to live with her and why?

I would run away with Josie, as she is getting older and is constanty forgetting things. I would run away for the sake of Josie's health, as she needs my help and support to live a better life. The rest of my group agreed, all of them would have run away to help Josie.

Why do you think Hollis led Josie to Steven's house?

I think she led Josie to this house, since it was an ideal place to stay for the time being. However, I also think that there is a deeper, more personal reason for her presence in their house. Hollis might feel that by staying in their house she is closer to the loving Regans, and she feels that she made a big mistake by leaving them. As Elena had mentioned, she has a strong belief that she might see Steven again.

Questions:
1. Why do you think Hollis led Josie to the house of Izzy, Old man and Steven?
I think that she thought she could see Steven again if she goes to his house.

2. Why do you think Josie loves Beatrice so much?
Because she lived her whole life with Beatrice even when she was in her childhood.

3. If you were in a position of Hollis taking care of Josie what would you do?
I would take care of Hollis like Josie and because Hollis loves her I would try to not get moved to a new house.

4. When Hollis met Steven again, she felt really happy and with joy if you were in the same situation will you be like Hollis?
I would be really happy because Steven was someone I could not forget from my mind and always heard voices of him in my mind.

5. If you were a author and you are going to make another book what would you write about?
I would write a prequel of everything that had happened before she went to Josie's place like what happened with Steven, Old man and Izzy and why she went somewhere else.

Hollis Wood pic

I choose this picture because it shows a lot of action. In this picture Steven is going on the mountain with the truck. But Steven is going to fast so.... the truck tips over. Steven said to Hollis "Jump Holly."
