In the beginning of the book, we learn that Hollis Woods is an insecure, unstable girl who has no proper family and has fled every family her social agency has sent her to. We can relate this to the wider world, where people run away from their problems and never seem to fit in wherever they go. Another connection I noticed between the book and real life is when Hollis Woods recalls the time she spent at the Regans' home, and regrets running away from them, as they supported her and provided a safe and happy environment. People in school, at home and in the community regret their actions. Just like Hollis Woods, there are many misfortunate, unhappy kids who cannot find a proper home, who have no one to take care of them and long for a proper family and a normal life. In relation to many people in the world, Hollis is a very troublesome girl who always skips school and makes fake notes to excuse her from going to school. She is in need of a proper family who will support her and love her, and she struggles to fit in and remain in a family.
